Different year, but The Way remains the same

Session One:

Following the way of Christ first means that we allow our own ‘ways’ to be interrupted. When Luke mentions that the first followers of Jesus were called The Way, he is speaking about people who allowed their lives to be interrupted by the good news of Jesus. In Luke’s account in his gospel and Acts, there are several individuals who lives are illustrations of how God interrupts our way, and invites us to join him on a radically different way.

Session Four:

How do we begin to follow the Way of Christ, God’s path of peace for all people? Our steps must begin with deep self-examination of the motivations and intentions of our hearts. Following Christ faithfully means we first turn a critical look inward, at our own attitudes, words, and actions. By constantly examining our steps as we follow Christ, we will be able to help ourselves and others find a path that leads to life.

Session Five:

One of the teachings we find Jesus often returning to is self-denial. Rather than understanding self-denial as a list of smothering rules, it is about using our resources for the good of others. Jesus often taught in parables about this, and made it clear that self-denial is an essential part of following him on the way. We can also see in the words of the apostle Paul how important self-denial is for following the Way of Christ.

Session Six:

The Way of Christ is a way of self-examination, self-denial, and self-sacrifice. Jesus challenges where our final commitments are with his call to discipleship. Jesus issued a challenge to the culture of his day, by placing commitment to God’s kingdom over commitment to family. Even today, the question of following Jesus is not whether we are pro or anti-family, but whether we are willing to be people who are crucified or not? Following Jesus on the way of sacrifice means we welcome all those as family who belong to Christ.
